Description

Bee Hotel – Nesting box

Bee Hotel – Nesting boxes are used as breeding places by cavity-nesting solitary bees like Mason Bees, Leafcutter bees and Yellow-faced bees. They naturally nest in hollow stems, earth banks or old beetle holes in deadwood. These bees aren’t aggressive, so they’re safe to have around kids and pets.

We have manufactured a Bee Nesting Hotel specifically to allow native solitary bees to have a little rest and deposit eggs.  These are bees that nest on the ground or in small gaps or hollows in timber or stone.

In recent years, there has been a reduction of specific trees in Australia. The environment that Bee nesting Box provides to our natives has become rare. Installing our Bee Nesting Hotel not only allows you to look after our vulnerable bee species but also is quite an interesting and aesthetic feature to place in your garden.

Our Bee Nesting Hotel is also suitable for Ladybird Beetles and Butterflies.

I am interested in purchasing a bee hotel, but what is your advice about where to place them in the garden - aspect, height from ground etc? Kate Armstrong asked on 13 September 2024

Hey Kate,
When placing the Bee Hotel - Nesting Box, you would want to consider the following to create a more ideal environment for bees.

1. Aspect: Position the bee hotel facing south or southeast to receive plenty of morning sunlight. Bees are more active in warm, sunny conditions, and this aspect helps them stay warm early in the day.

2. Height: Place the bee hotel at least 1 to 1.5 meters (3 to 5 feet) above the ground. This height helps protect the bees from predators and keeps the nesting tubes dry and clean.

3. Shelter from Rain and Wind: Ensure the bee hotel is sheltered from heavy rain and strong winds. Positioning it under an eave or near shrubs can provide protection.

4. Stable Position: Secure the bee hotel firmly to prevent swaying, as movement can disturb nesting bees.

5. Proximity to Plants: Place it near a variety of flowering plants, herbs, or vegetable gardens that provide pollen and nectar sources for the bees.

6. Avoid Heavy Shade: Avoid placing the hotel in full shade or too close to damp areas, as this can make it less appealing for bees.

By following these guidelines, you create a safe and attractive environment for bees to nest and thrive in your garden.
