Description

Protite Fibreglass Chopped Matting 1M x 1M

Protite Fibreglass Chopped Matting 1M x 1M is designed to provide re-enforcement and strength when used with fibreglass resin and fibreglass resin catalyst for general repairs. Protite Fibreglass Chopped Matting consists of strands of glass fibres laid randomly across each other. It is economical and provides good stiffness. Chopped matting is easier to conform to tight curves and corners.

For strength and reinforcement to repairs, a fibreglass mat is an affordable option. The random strands of glass fibres provide protection against moisture as well as promote flexibility in wet conditions without the risk of cracking or busting due its the hydrophobic properties found within these materials.

Key Features

  • 450 gsm
  • Strand-chopped fibreglass matting for reinforcement
  • Rough finish
  • Yellow and white fibres bound together in strands

How to Use

  1. Preparation

    • Clean the surface to ensure it is free from paint, grease, rust, and debris. The surface should be dry.

    • Cut the fibreglass mat to the required shape, allowing for a 3cm overlap. Tease out the fibers along the edge to create a feathered edge. For larger holes, a piece of cardboard can be glued to the back to form a base.

  2. Mixing Resin

    • Mix only the amount of resin and hardener needed for the job, as it will start to gel and cure in about 30 minutes at 20°C.

    • Follow the resin and hardener ratio instructions, but here is an example: mix the resin and hardener as per the ratio instructions (Cold Day – 2.5ml to 3.0ml of Hardener for every 100ml of resin, Hot Days 1.5ml to 2.0ml of Hardener for every 100ml of resin – 1ml of Hardener = 45 drops).

  3. Application

    • Apply a wet coat of resin onto the prepared surface.

    • Position the fibreglass mat onto the wet resin.

    • Apply another coat of resin onto the fibreglass matting by lightly dabbing (do not brush in), being careful not to move the matting. Ensure the fibreglass is thoroughly wet out.

    • Use a fibreglass roller to gently roll out the fibers, removing any trapped air. Avoid pushing the roller aggressively to prevent displacing the matting.

  4. Curing and Finishing

    • Allow the resin to fully cure for 24 hours.

    • Additional layers can be added after 24 hours, with light sanding between layers to improve bonding.

Precautions

  • Wear suitable protective clothing, rubber gloves, and eye and face protection when using fibreglass, resins, and hardeners.

  • Ensure correct surface preparation; failed repairs often result from incorrect preparation. Abrade and clean the surface to remove loose debris or paint.

  • Mix the correct ratios of resin and hardener according to the instructions.

  • Avoid applying polyester resins over cured epoxy resins. When working on virgin foam, seal it before applying fibreglass resin, as the resin may dissolve the foam.

  • It is not recommended to use in conditions below 10°C.

  • Clean the working surface after use.

  • Dab or roll out the resin slowly with a fibreglass roller to ensure no air bubbles are entrapped.

  • When using or working on virgin foam ensure the foam is sealed prior to use as application of fibreglass (polyester) resin may dissolve the foam.

  • Caution needs to be taken when using epoxy resins along with polyester resins. Epoxy resins may be applied over cured polyesters that have been dewaxed and well sanded, but polyesters should never be used over cured epoxy resins.
