FAQ

What is the coverage of the Protite Epoxy Glass Coat 750ml Kit?

The 750ml Glass Coat kit will typically cover 0.75m² at 1mm thick or 1.5m² at 0.5mm thick. The actual coverage can vary depending on the porosity of the surface you are coating. One coat of this epoxy is equivalent to 60 coats of ordinary varnish at 1mm thickness.

How do I prepare the surface for using the Protite Epoxy Glass Coat Kit?

To prepare the surface, ensure the workspace is well-ventilated and dust-free, with a temperature above 20°C and humidity below 60%. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove dust, grease, wax, and oil.

For porous timber, apply a penetrating pore sealer to lock in tannins and oils and allow it to dry completely. Mask off any areas you don’t want coated using low-tack masking tape. Elevate the item about 5 cm above the work area to allow the coating to drip freely.

Why is my surface not hardening fully after applying Protite Epoxy Glass Coat?

There could be several reasons: Not enough catalyst (hardener) was used, or the resin has been spread too thin. The minimum recommended depth is 5mm.

Another reason could be that the ratio of Resin (Part A) and Hardener (Part B) was not correct. If the material is not sufficiently mixed the final product will not achieve its full cure and may remain soft or sticky.

what preparation is required Rose Turnbull asked on 9 August 2024

Hey Rose,
To prepare for using the Protite Epoxy Glass Coat Kit, follow these steps:

Workstation Setup: Ensure the workspace is well-ventilated and dust-free. The area should have a temperature above 20°C and humidity below 60%.

Surface Preparation: Clean the surface thoroughly so it’s free of dust, grease, wax, and oil. For porous timber, apply a penetrating pore sealer to lock in tannins and oils. Allow it to dry completely.

Masking: Use low-tack masking tape to protect areas you don’t want coated. Elevate the item about 5 cm above the work area to allow the coating to drip freely.

Mixing: Combine the resin and hardener in a 2:1 ratio, mixing thoroughly to ensure a proper blend.

Pouring and Application: Pour the mixture onto the surface and spread evenly. The product will self-level, but you may need to use a spreader to ensure complete coverage.
