Possum Deterrent

How to get rid of Possums?

The Pestrol Possum Deterrent offers an effective and easy way of keeping those annoying possums from your property.  The device uses ultrasonic sound to scare away animals within its range. The Pestrol Possum Repeller is portable and can either be plugged in for power or used with batteries.  A further optional audible setting is available if required.

Our Possum Deterrent users Ultrasonics & Motion Sensors. The Possum Repeller operates on a Constant Mode and has a built-in Motion Sensor that activates the Possum Deterrent when Possums move into its infrared coverage zone. The Possum Repeller is easy to use, set up and maintain.

We are an Australian company with a free call number, so for best advice setting the unit up, either call us on 1800 33 88 88 or email.

Our possum control product is Humane, no chemicals, environmentally friendly maintenance-free and cost-effective.

The Pestrol Possum Repeller deters possums by using ultrasonic sounds generated from the units. A further optional audible setting is available if required.

With sound waves from 15kHz – 25kHz

  • Pestrol possum repeller emits an ultrasonic sound (inaudible to most humans)
  • Adjustable settings to change frequency.
  • Uses 9v / 240V AC transformer supplied
  • Weather-resistant
  • Environmentally friendly.

The effective range is up to 15 metres through to 170 degrees.

What is an Ultrasonic Sound

The primary feature of the bird and possum repeller is the ultrasonic signal.  This is a high-pressure sound that is only slightly audible to humans.  However, it is very effective at startling and scaring away unwanted pests.  Using a variable pulse generator, the ultrasonic emits a range of fluctuating sound waves to prevent the pest from becoming accustomed to the sound.

The Pestrol Deterrent operates continuously and has the option of using the built-in motion sensor that activates the unit when animals move into its coverage area. This area size is 24 x 15 metres = 360M2. You can change the setting to be on continuously to aid in controlling smaller animals like rodents and birds.

3 mode settings

Motion Sensor:  The Motion Sensor will activate the ultrasonic and sonic sounds when it detects the possum pests are in range.

Constant: The Constant setting will activate the ultrasonic and sonic noises and cycle through them at the range you fix at varying intervals.  The motion detector will deactivate on this setting.

Continuous Sweep:  The Continuous Sweep will activate a range of sonic and ultrasonic frequencies randomly at intervals.  The motion detector will deactivate on this setting.  This is helpful for repelling several different types of pests.

The Pestrol Possum Deterrent can be placed:

  • around the yard
  • garden
  • ceiling cavity
  • under eaves
  • campsite
  • garage
  • carport
  • workshops
  • porch
  • patio
  • balcony
  • greenhouses
  • pond
  • barn
  • rooftops
  • food storage.

Pestrol Possum Repeller comes in a waterproof control box, which can be used outside when operated on batteries.

Battery Option

The Pestrol Possum Deterrent is designed for convenience and flexibility, and it is able to be powered with 4 x C cell batteries (not included) to ensure it can be placed wherever needed without reliance on mains power. The efficiency of battery usage varies based on the operational settings chosen and the frequency of activation by the motion sensor. Under typical conditions, the batteries are expected to provide power to the unit for a duration ranging from 4 to 12 weeks. This variability accounts for the natural fluctuations in pest activity and the corresponding response of the device. We recommend monitoring the device’s performance and adjusting its settings or placement as necessary to optimize battery life and effectiveness.

The Possum Deterrent is wall mountable and comes with screws and fasteners for this purpose if required.

If you need a solar operating unit, please take a look at our Solar Animal Repeller that also utilises Ultrasonic Sound to repel various animals.

If you need a unit with a strobe light and added remote control function, please look at our Pestrol Possum Away.

Will this upset my dog? Jen asked on 16 November 2024

Hey Jen,
The Possum Deterrent has an adjustable dial to alter the ultrasonic frequency of the device, you can set it to a range that would be outside of most dog's audible hearing range.

There are however, many breeds of dogs, each with their own level of hearing, whenever using anything ultrasonic in nature it's best to monitor their behaviour after installing the unit and see how they react to the device.

If you find it upsets your dogs, we offer a 30-day moneyback guarantee on our website.

Will the unit work to rid possums already living in the ceiling, as well as deterring them when they want to come back in? Claire asked on 14 November 2024

Hey Claire,
We've had many customers use the Possum Deterrent in this way, but you would need to be able to have access to the ceiling cavity and would need to have the unit inside this cavity for the repelling function to take effect.

I have a couple possums inside roof . Inside the roof high 30cm .what I need to do? Thank you! Tru Nguyen asked on 13 October 2024

Hey Tru,
If you can access the ceiling cavity, then placing a Possum Deterrent into that space can help to repel and make the area inhospitable to possums when they try to enter.

What would be the best level from ground up to place the unit? Bea asked on 17 August 2024

Hey Bea,
The best placement for the Possum Deterrent would be in line with the Possums common angle of approach. For Example, if the possum is running along your fence, then having the unit in line with the fence would be most beneficial, as this way the motion sensor would pick up on the animal more easily, and the sound would better reach the animal as it's approaching.

Is the Night Mode correctly activated if street lights next to our house are bright? Mamoru asked on 26 May 2024

The effectiveness of Night Mode on the Possum Deterrent can be influenced by the presence of bright street lights. Night Mode typically relies on light sensors to differentiate between day and night. If the street lights are very bright, they might interfere with the light sensors, potentially preventing the device from switching to Night Mode correctly.

To ensure Night Mode functions as intended:

Positioning: Ensure the device is placed in a location where it is not directly exposed to the street lights. A shaded or partially covered spot might help.
Testing: Conduct a test by manually covering the light sensor to see if the device switches to Night Mode. This can help determine if the street lights are affecting the sensor.
Adjustment: Some devices have adjustable settings. Check if your Possum Deterrent allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the light sensor.
If the street lights are indeed too bright and affecting the device's functionality, you might need to find a more shaded area or use a different mode of operation that is not reliant on light sensors.

  1. Was a bit unsure if it would work to keep our problem possum away, but the tree I’m protecting has been free of damage since installing it. So pleased with the result.
Will buy another unit if needed to protect another area.

  4. I had possums peeing over my outdoor verandah, but not any more. The variable setting turns the deterrent on at night and has worked very well, so well in fact I bought a second one for another verandah. I would recommend the product. Good service and delivery too.
