Nature’s Way Fruit Fly Control Concentrate

Nature’s Way Fruit Fly Control Concentrate is a concentrated formula that can be used on fruit trees, vines and vegetables to control and kill fruit flies including Queensland fruit fly and Mediterranean fruit fly. It is suitable to use around the family garden. This is a protein and sugar-based bait that works by attracting fruit fly from several metres away and kill them when they ingest the treatment. It is derived from natural bacteria. Please check our other garden pest control solutions.

Ingredients:

  • 0.24g/L Spinosad
  • Plus the protein and sugar-based bait

Size:

  • 200ml

Directions for use:

When to apply:

Start applying as soon as fruit flies are present and fruit is at a susceptible stage (at very early fruit set, well before fruit changes colour).

Rate:

Mix 40mL Yates Nature’s Way Fruit Fly Control with 260mL water in a trigger bottle ( this is enough to treat 6 trees or plants).

How to apply:

Why do you apply it as a band or a spot spray to the trunk or lower foliage when the fruit fly flies directly onto the fruit itself? Fiona Jacob asked on 1 February 2025

Hey Fiona,
Applying Nature's Way Fruit Fly Control Concentrate as a band or spot spray to the trunk or lower foliage of plants, rather than directly on the fruit, serves several strategic purposes:

1. Targeting Adult Flies: Fruit flies, particularly males, often rest and shelter on the trunks and lower foliage of trees. By applying the bait in these areas, you increase the likelihood of attracting and killing adult flies before they reach the fruit.

2. Reducing Direct Fruit Contact: Direct application on fruit is avoided to prevent any potential residue from affecting the fruit's quality or safety for consumption. Since Nature's Way Fruit Fly Control has no withholding period, it's still important to wash the fruit before eating to ensure cleanliness.

3. Attracting Flies Away from Fruit: The protein and sugar-based bait in the concentrate attracts fruit flies from several meters away. By placing it on the trunk or lower foliage, you draw the flies away from the fruit itself, reducing the chance of them laying eggs in the fruit.

4. Efficiency and Economy: Applying the concentrate in a targeted manner helps ensure that the active ingredients are used efficiently, reducing waste and the need for excessive reapplication.

Overall, this method helps break the fruit fly lifecycle by targeting adult flies before they can infest the fruit, while also maintaining the safety and quality of the produce.

Will this product harm bees? Shane asked on 14 September 2024

Hey Shane,
Yes, the active ingredient in Nature's Way Fruit Fly Control Concentrate can be harmful to bees, especially when it is wet and freshly applied. Spinosad is an insecticide derived from natural sources that targets a wide range of pests, but it is toxic to bees upon direct contact. To minimize the risk to bees, only apply during times when bees are not active, such as early morning or late evening. Allow the pesticide to dry completely before bees are likely to forage in the area. Once dried, spinosad's toxicity to bees significantly decreases, making it safer, but it's crucial to follow these precautions to protect pollinators.
