Munns Emerald Kikuyu Mix Lawn Seed – 1kg
Munns Emerald Kikuyu Mix Lawn Seed – 1kg is a turf Kikuyu with finer leaf texture and a darker green colour than vegetative Kikuyu and other seeded variants. The product is more cold-resistant than other warm-season grasses, thus its green colour lasts longer in the winter. It also tolerates heat and drought well and is resistant to a variety of typical grass pests and diseases. Also, it has a high wear tolerance and responds swiftly.
Emerald Kikuyu is a warm-season grass that thrives in temperatures between 15 and 40 degrees Celsius. The grass retains its winter colour better than most and does not discolour easily even after a single frost. The minimum temperature for growth (on established Emerald) is around 8°C, which is significantly lower than that of typical warm-season grasses like Bermudagrass or couch grass (Cynodon dactylon).
Even on sandy soils, Emerald Kikuyu has a high endurance for long periods of drought. It is tolerant of moderate soil salinity and salt spray, as well as waterlogging.
This seed can be planted in a variety of soils. While it thrives in well-structured, high-fertility soils, it can also thrive in silty, sandy soils with moderate fertility. It can grow in very acidic soils (pH 4.5) and low-phosphorus, low-potassium soils.

How to use
Because the Emerald Kikuyu Lawn Seed Mix can take 1 to 3 weeks to sprout (depending on soil temperature), we’ve combined it with a mother crop’ (Improved Turf Type Perennial Ryegrass) that germinates quickly. This will help to push out any weed seeds that germinate, and the Kikuyu will gradually expand and over-run the mother crop,’ leaving you with a stand of Kikuyu.
During germination, it’s critical to keep the top 1cm moist at all times. The best time to sow Emerald Kikuyu Lawn Seed mix is in the spring, summer, or early autumn, although it may be sown any time of year as long as the ground temperature is between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius.
It’s critical to begin cutting the mother crop’ as soon as it reaches approximately 5cm, with the goal of keeping the cut to around 2.5cm. This will assist the Emerald Kikuyu to grow by allowing warmth and sunlight into the ‘thatch.’ If you allow the ‘mother crop’ to grow too tall, it will shadow the Emerald Kikuyu and impede its growth.
